LOVE in the time of Andalusia - An evening of musical delights -

For Valentine's day celebrations, we want to take you back in time musically, in a place and time where Roms, Muslims, Jews and Christians were creating together the most sensual of arts, in music, architecture, gastronomy, literature....

3 Rooms

*Cabaret/performance room with acoustic

performances by 3 bands*

-FLAMENCO ALCALA-

A Flamenco ensemble evoking the glaring light and deep shadows of Southern Spain. The group  is headed by guitarist, Gerardo Alcala one of the very few foreigners to be respected as a full fledged flamenco artist by the flamencos of Andalucia, Spain, among whom he has lived the authentic flamenco lifestyle for many years and regularly includes Jafelin as singer and Afifa Lahbabi and Bonnie Stewart as dancers.

-TZIMMES-

Sephardic love songs from the golden age of the Iberic Peninsula. Much of
the repertoire is comprised of serenades and love songs, and many of the rhythms and moods have a Spanish feel. Tzimmes is at the forefront of not only preserving the repertoire, but transforming it and adapting it in new musical ways.

Moshe Denburg - Lead Vocal, Guitar, Band Leader
Yona Bar-Sever - Electric Bass, Guitar, Vocals, Hand Percussion
Saul Berson - Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute

-THE SERWAN YAMOLKY TRIO-

Oud maestro Serwan Yamolky has been performing the folk and classical music of Arabic and Kurdish traditions for over 5 decades. His unparalleled immersion in the musical traditions of his generation is matched by his fine poetry and song writing. He is joined for this performance by local percussionist Liam MacDonald, who is a mainstay of the Vancouver music scene performing with Celso Machado and Gord Grdina. Rounding out the trio is Vancouver's own Tim Gerwing, an electronic and world musician who has been performing with Serwan for over 10 years. The trio will perform music from Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and the Maghreb.
